Module 1 presents a definition for assessment, the goals of the assessment process, and the criteria for a good assessment. It also discusses the differences between screeners and assessments and where and how these instruments are commonly used. An explanation of how assessments can be used to address some of the challenges in the human services field and how they can support Evidence Based Practice is also provided.

Module 2 explains that any assessment is only as culturally sensitive as the individuals that administer the tool and interpret the information collected. It explores general concepts of cultural sensitivity and competence and how these concepts can be applied while administering an assessment. Staff behaviors that promote cultural sensitivity and how these behaviors can be used in assessment are also covered.

Module 3 provides information on the administration skills needed to collect valid and reliable information during an assessment that can be used to help plan for client treatment and to conduct program level analyses and comparisons. It provides administration guidelines to use when conducting a semi-structured assessment and tips for shaping client responses into the desired format, as well as tips for individualizing the assessment and making culturally appropriate adjustments during administration.

Module 3.5 presents an overview of the six dimensions of ASAM patient placement criteria and the DSM-IV multi-axial classification system.It describes the main theoretical foundations of ASAM placement guidelines and how the DSM addresses substance use disorders. A brief explanation of how the GAIN uses DSM and ASAM criteria to support diagnostic impressions and treatment planning recommendations is also provided.

Module 4 presents the foundation for clinically interpreting the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs - Initial (GAIN-I) assessment. This module describes how the GAIN helps to support a clinician in determining diagnoses and developing effective treatment plans. Additionally, this module emphasizes the role of clinical judgment in supporting diagnostic impressions and developing treatment recommendations and maintaining or enhancing the validity of report through culturally responsive interpretation.

Module 5 provides an orientation to information presented in the GAIN Recommendation and Referral Summary (GRRS). This module discusses how to support diagnostic impressions and treatment planning recommendations using the GAIN assessment in conjunction with DSM-IV-TR and ASAM Patient Placement Criteria. This module also examines strategies for efficiently and effectively editing the GRRS report and emphasizes the importance of individualizing the report for each client.

Module 6 presents an introduction to utilizing the data from the GAIN assessment for program evaluation and program planning. This module discusses how to effectively interpret GAIN data related to client groups, treatment services provided, and client outcomes. This module also emphasizes the importance of data analysis to build responsive programming.

Module 7 explains students’ possible next step of earning GAIN Site Interviewer certification. More information about this level of certification as well as information on the other GAIN administration certification levels and additional services available through the GAIN Coordinating Center is provided.
